Intel`s desktop processor shipments hurt

Chip maker Intel`s supply problems have affected its ability to get its desktop chips into PCs, reports eweek.com.

Intel`s executives say the interruption was only partially eased by third-party chip-set suppliers, and has caused mismatches that hurt Intel`s desktop processor shipments.

Meanwhile, its rival Advanced Micro Devices was able to take advantage of the situation to gain as much as a point of market share, said Intel`s CFO, Andy Bryant.

2005: Notebook sales increase

According to the NPD Group, a US consumer and research house, consumer electronics sales between 20 November and 24 December 2005 brought in $8.2 billion, a 10% increase over the same time period in 2004.

ZDNet Research reports that computers, both notebooks and desktops, faired very well. Notebook unit sales increased 42.1% and desktop unit sales rose 14.7% over the same time period in 2004.

The average selling price of a notebook dropped from $1 178 in 2004 to $979 in 2005, and desktops dropped from $654 to $586.

Seagate ships high-powered laptop drive

Seagate announced it is shipping the Seagate Momentus 5400.3 - its new 2.5-inch notebook PC drive featuring perpendicular recording, a technology that permits greater density.

The drive packs in 132GB per square inch, creating a 160GB total capacity. The Momentus 5400.3 uses Ultra ATA 100 connectivity, reports PC World.

LG introduces dual-core notebooks

LG Electronics has developed a range of notebooks with dual core processors that offers increased battery life, better power management and extended connectivity options, reports Al Bawaba.

The two new LG models, P1 Express Dual and M1 Express Dual feature entertainment and business capabilities ranging from enhanced graphics to better responsiveness and support for greater options.

Featuring Intel`s Core Duo Processors, the notebooks are powered by the latest Pentium M processor with a 667MHz frontside bus, while the accompanying chipset handles up to 2GB of DDR2 memory and provides support for ExpressCard (PCI Express) options.
