Intelsat bulks up African coverage

Johannesburg, 14 Apr 2010

Global satellite provider Intelsat has launched its latest dish over African skies, to add coverage to operators, service providers and media customers.

Intelsat 25, which was renamed after being purchased from ProtoStar, will expand coverage to the continent. Intelsat 25 started service last week, while Intelsat New Dawn will launch this year. Both dishes will add additional Ku-band coverage for Africa.

Intelsat 25 provides capacity for high-growth applications, such as cellular backhaul for expansion to remote locations, IP trunking and video services.

Flavien Bachabi, Intelsat VP for Africa, says the company will continue to support the growth requirements of its African wireless operators, broadband service providers and media customers.

Once New Dawn is launched, Intelsat will have 25 satellites servicing Africa. It will provide satellite coverage for the Soccer World Cup later this year, with as many as seven satellites providing capacity for the event.

The company has also launched a converged space and terrestrial offering, IntelsatOne.

“Intelsat has launched IntelsatOne to address the emerging requirements of media organisations, network service providers and government customers for an improved hybrid terrestrial-satellite infrastructure that provides a single source for converged data, voice and video solutions across the Intelsat network,” says Bachabi.
