International commercial rollout of WAP solutions by Siemens bodes well for rapid WAP deployment in South Africa

Johannesburg, 20 Jan 2000

Siemens AG and Phone.com yesterday announced the world-wide availability of Phone.com's WAP solution for immediate commercial deployment at over ten mobile operators in Europe and Asia, including operators in Germany, Spain, Norway, Belgium and Hong Kong.

Gary Cousins of Siemens Telecommunications in South Africa says that the international announcement bodes well for the commercial deployment of WAP technology in South Africa.

"Internationally, Siemens is a leader in WAP technology. Phone.com's quality software and time-to-market lead will enable Siemens to offer WAP capability to our broad customer base of over 140 operators in over 70 countries.

"Siemens is currently conducting trials with the identical Phone.com WAP solution for cellular network operator Vodacom, and these trials should be completed during the first quarter of this year," says Cousins.

According to the international press release issued yesterday, Siemens has awarded 'commercial availability status' to Phone.com's UP.LinkT Server Suite R4, a status that is earned only by software that Siemens' rigorous quality processes deem to be ready for commercial deployment in mobile networks.

Siemens to date has entered into relationships with 20 GSM network operators in Asia and Europe to implement Phone.com's WAP solution for trial and/or commercial operation. The company is ready to provide logistics management, installation support, customer training, and 24 hours x 7 days customer support for Phone.com's UP.LinkT Server Suite R4 to enable network operators to bring WAP services to market quickly.

The UP.Link Server Suite offers GSM network operators a complete WAP-based solution to enable their subscribers to gain access to Internet-based content and applications. The Phone.com UP.Link Server Suite is in its fourth generation, providing a scalable and robust implementation of the WAP protocol. Since 1997, Phone.com's solutions have been licensed to over 50 of the world's leading operator networks.
