A R2 million set of sophisticated monitoring systems has been installed at Internet Solutions (IS). Customers whose servers are hosted at IS can log on to the company`s Customer Zone secure Web site and monitor performance of their hardware, backup status and application up-time at data centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town and the UK.
Says Brian Michaels, product development manager at IS: "Our monitoring service is a powerful new solution with advanced features and has been developed to help customers know whether their hosted servers are up and running, and whether the applications on those servers are responding appropriately."
The system is automated and integrated into the IS control centre. Server uptime is one of the cornerstones of operating a business in the digital economy and IS customers can get a detailed, instant snapshot of how their systems are performing. It`s not just limited to software, however, the system also monitors hardware resources.
"Customers can now see how the hard disk, processor and physical memory are coping with loads in detailed reports," says Michaels.
"They can set threshold limits and when system resources are within 10 percent of this, they are alerted by an e-mail notification. If critical thresholds are exceeded, an SMS and e-mail alert are then sent," he says.
Backups have been made more transparent in that they can be monitored on-line. Every day, users of the Customer Zone whose automatic backups are hosted by IS can see if they were successful.
Says Michaels: "We are now able to monitor a variety of protocols on each server. Everything we monitor can now be viewed in the IS Customer Zone including a detailed history of up and downtime status, percentage availability and graphs dating back for six months of each service.
"We have also given users the ability to add their own protocols to be monitored per server also including the ability to edit and delete them," he says.
