Intervate, the local software developer and solution provider focusing on intranet, extranet and portal technology solutions, recently launched its Enterprise Solution for Intranets (ESI) to assist enterprises to improve worker productivity and collaboration.
According to Migal van As, MD of Intervate, the ESI is a robust and versatile intranet solution that builds on Microsoft infrastructure. "It addresses the challenges associated with unifying people, processes and systems within large enterprises by giving people easy access to information," he says.
The ESI can either be deployed via an existing Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server interface or via the Intervate IntraCS Portal. Either way, the ESI integrates with Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel, providing an effective document management capability that allows users to work in a manner to which they are accustomed. Furthermore, the ESI is closely integrated with SharePoint, providing a number of add-ons and extensions to the platform.
The ESI comprises an enterprise portal, a powerful framework for web-based application development, rapid deployment and development tools and a suite of intranet applications.
"The current IT profile of large enterprises is generally made up of a large number of isolated systems and information silos," says van As. "By providing a single consolidated interface into these disparate systems, an enterprise portal reduces information duplication and time wasting activities associated with attempts to locate relevant information."
An integrated search is core to the ESI, providing a single point from which to search numerous disparate systems. Search results are consolidated, security filtered, ranked and presented to users. The search utilises specified available search engines via the use of adaptors.
A suite of intranet employee self-service and collaborative applications is provided with ESI. Optional add-on applications are available. These include news and announcements, key performance indicators, balanced scorecard, document management, a user information directory, an organisational chart, electronic forms, an interactive floor-plan, a library resource manager, theme manager, a glossary and translations application and company links.
"Realising the business benefits promised by intranet technology has, for many organisations, resulted in systems that are costly to maintain and change," says Van As. "By providing out-of-the-box functionality that is quick and easy to install, and allowing users to effortlessly adapt the solution to suit their specific intranet needs, the ESI offers a very strong business case in the market."
The ESI is built on the Microsoft technology platform and Intervate works closely with the company to ensure that optimal value is added to Microsoft`s existing intranet and portal capabilities.
Extensive collaboration with Microsoft has ensured that the ESI extends the document capabilities of SharePoint Portal Server by combining advanced functionality with simple usability. The Microsoft technologies that are incorporated as part of the ESI solution include Windows 2000, Microsoft SQL 2000, Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server and the Active Directory. Once launched, SharePoint Portal Server 2 will also be incorporated.
