Lotus Development, Telenor Mobile and IBM Norway have revealed their plans to develop a WAP-based solution that allows employees to access intranet hosted information such as e-mail and scheduling via their cell phone.
"While it is possible for people to access their e-mail using their cell phone, company employees frequently require a different address to facilitate this process," says Lesego Tlhabanelo, the newly appointed marketing communications manager at Lotus Development SA. "The solution that is currently under development, however, makes it possible to go through the corporate firewall and onto the company intranet without compromising security."
For the first time, says Tlhabanelo, people will be able to use the e-mail address they use the most - the office address - to read messages. "When you look at this in the context of mobile and collaborative messaging, it is easy to see the benefits to be had from the implementation of this new system. Users will be able to access the same calendar residing on their office PC as well as the organisational telephone directory."
In time, he adds, it will be possible to download substantial amounts of data from the company intranet, providing this is not graphic intensive. According to Lotus, the solution is currently being developed by the Norwegian company, Telenor Mobile while both Lotus and IBM are modifying their software to accommodate these WAP-enabled solutions. "IntraWAP can be installed and used by all Lotus Notes users," he says.
