Iomega creates new data protection bundle for Microsoft Small Business Server users

NYSE-listed Iomega Corporation, a global leader in data storage and protection, recently announced the availability of the Iomega REV SBS Data Protection Solution for use with both Iomega REV 70GB and REV 35GB Backup Drives.

Designed to protect and secure Microsoft SBS (small business server) data for small business users, the new Iomega SBS Data Protection Solution is an integrated set of tools for easy data backup, disaster recovery, and protection from computer viruses.

The new Iomega SBS Data Protection Solution comes with two removable REV disks (either 35GB or 70GB) as well as CA BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Microsoft Small Business Server, including ARCserve backup agents for Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL, open files, SharePoint, and attached laptops and desktops (five licences). CA eTrust Antivirus completes the package with full anti-virus protection for the server and up to five attached clients.

The integrated management console for CA BrightStor ARCserve software provides easy access to security and backup services normally associated with dedicated IT departments in much larger companies. A highly integrated set of agents provides scheduled or on-demand backup and restore for Microsoft SBS Standard and Premium editions. eTrust Antivirus provides round-the-clock monitoring of new threats, while the Iomega REV drive and disk technology provides a thoroughly tested data storage platform and the security of an estimated 30-year archival life.

Iomega has also announced the latest in its innovative line of REV removable HDD technology: the new Iomega REV 70GB SATA Backup Drive, available now for standalone Windows PCs or as a backup kit for Microsoft Windows servers.

Two REV 70GB SATA solutions are now available: For desktop PCs, the Iomega REV 70GB SATA Backup Drive includes a drive and a removable REV 70GB disk, complete with EMC Retrospect Express backup software. For servers, the REV 70GB SATA Server Backup and Disaster Recovery Kit includes a drive and five removable REV 70GB disks along with CA`s BrightStor ArcServe Backup OEM edition software, including disaster recovery.

Advantages of the new SATA interface over the legacy Parallel ATA interface include higher maximum transfer rates, simpler cable connections, and increased data integrity on transfers to and from the host PC. The SATA standard, which first entered the PC market in 2003, has since become dominant in the industry and is built into most new computers.

Iomega`s new REV 70GB Backup Drive features improved transfer rates of 30MBps (max), versus 25MBps for first-generation REV 35GB products. Both generations of REV products boast extensive third-party software support, estimated 30-year archival life, and an estimated one million rewrite durability - the kind of performance tape products such as DAT 72 can never match. And while tape products require frequent head cleaning, tape retensioning, and an expensive tape replacement regime, REV drives and disks are designed for continuous reliable use with zero maintenance.

Versus DAT 72, the REV 70GB Backup Drive is up to 10 times faster, almost double the native capacity, and a REV 70 drive still costs less. These advantages translate into the lowest total cost of ownership (TCO) of all major backup solutions. Savings include reduced labour, hardware costs and system downtime. Higher capacity REV 70GB disks also reduce time spent changing media and provide greater consolidation of data.

The Iomega REV 70GB Backup Drive is now available worldwide in external USB 2.0 and internal ATAPI and SATA models. The Iomega REV 35GB Backup Drive is available in ATAPI, external USB 2.0, FireWire, SCSI, SATA and multi-disk autoloader configurations, including the unique desktop form factor REV Loader 280, which utilizes up to eight REV 35GB disks for a total of 280GB of native storage capacity, and the new REV Loader 560, incorporating one REV 70GB drive and up to eight REV 70GB disks in same convenient automated desktop form factor. Since launching the REV platform in 2004, Iomega has sold more than 250 000 REV Drives and more than 1.3 million REV disks worldwide. The Iomega REV drive has won more than 20 technology awards across the globe.

Iomega REV products are available from a large base of value-added resellers (VARs), systems integrators (SIs) and others that work directly with small businesses on their storage and data protection needs. Thomson Grass Valley REV PRO drives and disks, designed specifically by Iomega for the professional audio/visual industry, are available from Grass Valley distributors and resellers.

The REV 70GB SBS Data Protection Solution is now available worldwide with a suggested price in South Africa of R3099. The REV 35GB version has a suggested price of R2 779.

The REV 70GB SATA Backup Drive with one removable REV 70GB disk is available now for R4 850; The REV 70GB SATA Server Backup and Disaster Recovery Kit with five removable REV 70GB disks is available now for R7 750 (all prices exclude VAT).

All REV 70GB Backup Drives come with a worldwide three-year warranty. REV 35GB Backup Drives are warranted for two years in Europe and Africa. All REV disks are warranted for five years.
