iPAQs exploit convergence boom

HP has unveiled three iPAQ Pocket PCs, all equipped with Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 operating system.

"There`s been an explosion in the global market for converged devices, and locally we are experiencing similar growth as more users are seeking a single device for all their personal and professional communication needs," says Nadia Hufkie, HP`s iPAQ product manager.

The three new models, aimed at mobile professionals, are the HP iPAQ rx5000 series Travel Companion, the HP iPAQ rw6815 Personal Messenger, and the HP iPAQ rx4000 Mobile Media Companion. All promise mobile communication, entertainment and productivity through simpler navigation and access to , says the company in a statement.

The HP iPAQ Travel Companion features a pre-installed navigation system. It is, adds Hufkie, still a full-function handheld providing a mobile office with connectivity to surf the Web.

The HP iPAQ rw6815 Personal Messenger allows users to make phone calls, send text and instant messages, surf the , and check e-mails. Its features include calendar, contacts, tasks and e-mail synced automatically over the mobile telephone using push technology, as well as the Microsoft Office suite and a built-in HP Photosmart Camera.

The HP iPAQ rx4000 Mobile Media Companion, with over a gigabyte of memory, supports Skype, and includes HP Photosmart Mobile software, allowing users to create digital photo albums.

These iPAQs include a number of connectivity and data protection features, explains Hufkie, including WLAN access, Bluetooth 2.0 EDR wireless technology.

Models within each of the three ranges vary in price from R3 000 to R5 000.
