iPhone 4 sees record sales

Apple blew past its previous initial sales record for the iPhone, notching 1.7 million units sold for the iPhone 4 in its first three days, reports The San Francisco Chronicle.

The previous models, the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G, sold 1 million units over their first three days. The original iPhone took 74 days to get to 1 million in sales.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs says: "This is the most successful product launch in Apple's history. Even so, we apologise to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply."

Apple accused of patent infringement

The International Trade Commission (ITC) is opening an investigation into whether technology used to compress and decompress images in Apple products like the iPad and iPhone infringe on patents held by S3 Graphics, states PC Mag.

The investigation will determine if "there is a violation" of a section of the Tariff Act that bans the importation of devices or software that infringe on US patents.

S3 Graphics wants the ITC to ban Apple from importing devices and software that include its image processing technology, and from selling those products in the US.

Samsung unveils 4G smartphone

Just a few weeks after rolling out the HTC Evo 4G, Sprint has introduced the Samsung Epic 4G smartphone, says Computerworld.

Verizon Wireless has also revealed a Samsung smartphone, dubbed the Fascinate. Verizon's offering has similar features to the Captivate and no physical keyboard.

Sprint is expected to allow unlimited access to its fast Wimax 4G network at a low cost for the indefinite future as it tries to lure customers and catch up to market leaders Verizon and AT&T.
