The SMS read: “Thank you for your interest in the new iPhone 4. The newest smartphone in the world was, however, sold out on its debut! Watch your phone for more information about availability.”
Executive head of corporate communications at Vodacom, Richard Boorman, says more than 10 000 people registered with Vodacom to receive news about the iPhone 4. When it came into the country, half that number responded to e-mails from Vodacom, saying they were still interested in purchasing the device. Only a percentage of that number went through to the final pre-order phase, according to Boorman, but it was still a significant amount.
“Of course, it's a challenge to secure as many phones as we'd like to initially,” says Boorman. However, he assures that new stock has now arrived.
“We still encourage people to check stock with stores before going there to purchase the phones,” he says.
Yesterday, retailers in Cape Town complained of a shortage of stock. While the stores had enough stock to cover the launch, they were concerned about the next few days of heavy demand.
