I often find myself marvelling at Apple's latest offerings. Now when I say often, I'm talking about how uncontrollably often Apple has a new product for Steve Jobs to introduce to the world.
Feels like every time I visit the Apple site, there's something new on offer. Now don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of their products, albeit some more than others, but I just find it hard to keep up with the hard-working minds at Apple headquarters. This, in essence, suits me just fine.
Apple's latest offering to the cellular phone market doesn't disappoint. The iPhone 4 took all that you loved about the iPhone 3GS and made it that much better (along with removing a couple of things you didn't love).
Now, before we get started, I am aware of the complaints that many users abroad have had with the iPhone 4. Many consumers have complained to Apple about a faulty antenna design resulting in a reception problem. Apple did, however, clear this up with an official statement to the public explaining that it was a fault in the software that calculates the signal strength, which was found to be using an incorrect formula for the calculation. Apple did provide a free software upgrade for users to fix this problem. So now with the minor glitch that has been plaguing the iPhone 4's good name out of the way, let's continue.
The first noticeable difference in the newest version of the smartphone is the design. Apple has moved away from the curved back-panel for a sleek, flat back-panel, making the iPhone 4 just that much slimmer. Which is already a plus, considering the already-dieted-down 3GS model. Overall the new design, encompassing the new back-panel, a metal band wrapped around the outer rim of the phone and an all-out more aesthetically pleasing approach, is a winner. It feels more like a phone than a gadget, which admittedly is where I felt the previous models fell short.
The next, and possibly biggest, feature on the new iPhone is the display. The introduction of Apple's Retina Display has made viewing on the iPhone a far better experience. The colours pop more, the images are crisper and clearer, and video looks much better. The higher resolution and increased PPi's contribute to this feat. Speaking of video, the iPhone can now capture HD footage, but more on that later. So far, the design has been improved upon and the display has been reinvented to make viewing far more pleasurable. Thumbs up, Mr Jobs.
iPhone 4 plays host to an extensive number of features, each of which are equally impressive. The camera has been upgraded to 5-megapixels (an improvement on the old 3-megapixel one), which now boasts an LED flash and a backside illumination sensor. The video capture on iPhone 4 is now in HD, meaning all your home movies and videos of nights out will be clearer, sharper and, of course, in HD. Perfect. An additional camera on the front of the phone has also been added to allow for FaceTime videocalling, another Apple innovation.
The new Apple A4 processor has greatly increased process speeds and the overall power of the handset. Coupled with an improved accelerometer, multi-touch technology, and a three-axis gyro, the iPhone's responses to your movements, taps and touches are now much smoother. The battery life has also been improved upon for longer talk-time, audio playback and Internet use.
Conclusively, Apple has re-engineered what was already one of its biggest sellers and made it just that much better. Improved battery life, a sleeker design, additional features, upgrades on the old features and an overall “gimme” appeal makes iPhone 4 a big winner.
