IRS moves to self-service
The US Internal Revenue Service has begun offering self-assistance options at some of its offices that give taxpayers limited access to computers and phones, so they can reach the IRS's Web site and toll-free phone lines without waiting in a long line, reports WebCPA.
In a new report, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration conducted tests of the self-service option at 15 Taxpayer Assistance Centres in eight states during the 2008 filing season, after the IRS introduced it in October 2007.
The IRS increased the service by 35 sites for the current filing season. While posing as taxpayers during visits to centres providing self-assistance, TIGTA auditors found that taxpayers seeking to use the IRS's computers and phones had to answer a series of questions regarding the type of service requested and provide demographic information (such as age, income level, gender and zip code).
HR self-service gains popularity
Perquest, a national payroll company, reports businesses have been eager to learn more about a time-saving payroll feature known as employee self-service (ESS), according to PRWeb.
ESS is a payroll service feature that allows an employer's workforce to access personal payroll information 24/7 from any computer with Internet access.
The ESS feature provides immediate answers to some of the most frequently asked payroll questions, such as pay history, tax status, direct deposit, accrued time-off expense reimbursements and more.
Browne Jacobson adopts HR self-service
Browne Jacobson has implemented a new human capital management system, allowing employees self-service access to a number of functions, including HR records and holiday requests, states Employee Benefits.
The Midlands-based law firm brought in the software, provided by COA Solutions, to store, update, access and process HR and payroll information more efficiently and accurately. It also offers improved reporting functions.
The company plans to expand self-service to allow employees access to automated probation period reviews and information relating to absence and self-certification.
