IS launches backup business unit

SA`s largest commercial Internet service provider, Internet Solutions (IS), has formed a joint venture with software development house Attix5, creating a new business unit - IS Backup.

The move comes at a time when South African companies are more seriously assessing the risk that computer viruses, hackers, theft and equipment failure can pose to data that is critical to their businesses.

Says Tony Walt, GM, Remote Access at Internet Solutions (IS): "About 50% of South African companies have inadequate data security measures in place. Just one incident of data loss can cause an average downtime of six hours which can cost up to R1 800 per incident to fix. That`s apart from the losses in productivity caused by the downtime."

The joint venture sees IS Backup offering two data backup products - OutSource and InSource. OutSource backs up specified sets of files and folders at a certain time at certain intervals. This data is compressed, and sent securely to a server at IS`s data centre where it is stored. The InSource solution works in the same way except that the files are stored on site on a company`s own network.

Says Roy Davies, Chief Corporate Affairs, at Attix5: "Most people don`t backup data on individual PCs because of the hassle factor. OutSource and InSource automates the process and keeps the data safe. If information is lost for any reason, the information can be restored quickly."

Walt says an organisation`s computers contain many gigabytes of critical data.

"Fundamental business documents like client and staff records as well as e-mail communications need to be kept safe. IS Backup has been formed to help companies achieve this effortlessly," he says.
