Internet Solutions and Attix5 have formed a joint venture - IS Backup - to launch an automated, secure critical storage backup system to deliver storage, recovery and remote access for desktop and laptop computer users.
The new products, BackUp Solutions, allow for critical data to be automatically backed up and stored at a remote site, while still allowing the user to search and find backed-up files.
Speaking at the BackUp Solutions launch today, Tony Walt, IS GM of Remote Access, pointed out the value of critical data within an organisation. However, he said, many companies do not back up their data effectively because it is not always easy and convenient to do so regularly, there are concerns about the security of a backup environment, and the cost of traditional backup systems can be high.
"About 50% of South African companies have inadequate data security measures in place. Just one incident of data loss can cause an average downtime of six hours, which can cost up to R1 800 per incident to fix. That`s apart from the losses in productivity caused by the downtime."
Walt said the new solution has the advantages of being unique, user-friendly, cost-effective and automatic. BackUp Solutions offers intelligent selection and de-selection of critical data, automatically backing up data according to schedules set by a systems administrator. Its file structure mirrors that of the user`s own C-drive, making user searches for old data simple and fast. The stored data is easily accessible through a secure interface via any Web browser.
Roy Davies, chief, Corporate Affairs at Attix5, said: "Most people don`t back up data on individual PCs because of the hassle factor. OutSource and InSource automates the process and keeps the data safe. If information is lost for any reason, the information can be restored quickly."
BackUp Solution OutSource provides a remote backup facility at IS`s DMZ data centre, with all data transmitted and stored encrypted. This means that selected critical data is under company control in a secure and encrypted remote storage facility. Clients can access their data over the corporate intranet, via direct dial or from anywhere in the world on the Internet. BackUp InSource allows all data to be stored locally by the client on their own equipment, with the use of additional server software powered by Attix5. Users can access their data over the LAN or any Internet-connected device.
