South African mobile communications specialist, Exotic Systems, has just announced the availability of the world's first combined personal tracker and mobile phone. Available immediately from the Midrand-based company, the MAMBO 55 is part of Exotic Systems' comprehensive range of mobile and wireless Internet equipment.
The MAMBO 55 uses GSM/GPRS and GPS satellite navigation technology for personal safety and asset monitoring. "We are delighted to be able to offer this handy device," enthuses Dr Amish Chana, MD of Exotic Systems. "Its convenient size and durability are great features, but what really makes this a fantastic product is the number of potential services that could be developed for it."
As well as its GSM/GPRS engine and 20 channel GPS receiver, the MAMBO 55 can accept voice and data connections and features a built-in motion detector. "It is ideal as a field or lone worker emergency device," explains Dr Chana. "In the event of an emergency, the person carrying the unit can activate it by pressing a button and it can send an SMS containing its exact location, relay it's location to a tracking server using GPRS or make a voice call to a predefined number via the GSM network."
This ability can even be automated using geo-fencing. Once an area has been geo-fenced, a notification will be sent automatically if the unit enters or leaves the area. "This is perfect for territory management, route verification and monitoring prohibited locations," observes Dr Chana. "As well as being used to improve fleet management, car salespeople could hide the device in vehicles being taken for test drives and it could even be used to track a shipment by placing it in the box. You imagination really is the only limitation as far as applications for this device are concerned."
The company specialises in helping organisations develop mobile solutions, using its intimate understanding of how GSM and GPRS technology works to design the right system, incorporate the right hardware and ensure any GSM/GPRS-related costs are kept to a minimum.
The MAMBO 55 is just one of the devices available from Exotic Systems. The firm already has a large footprint across Africa and supplies GPRS and EDGE modems to a number of African mobile operators. "Our SAMBA 55 and 75 USB modems are very popular," confirms Dr Chana, "especially since they can be re-branded and their software customised to suit customer's individual requirements."
Exotic Systems also assists mobile operators with core network design, evolution and infrastructure support. "Having worked on core networks and 3G rollouts around the world, we understand mobile technology better than many standard service providers and that puts us in a unique position," explains Dr Chana. "Our extensive experience is readily welcomed by companies and has helped fuel our rapid growth."
The company is happy to demonstrate any of its products to interested parties free. "When it comes to the tracking devices like the MAMBO 55, a demonstration speaks more than anything else," explains Dr Chana. The company took up residency at the incubator earlier this year and has enjoyed constant growth since. "Brian Carl Brown and the team have been amazing," confirms Dr Chana. "Not only has his enthusiastic and informed mentoring helped us manage this tricky stage of growth, but he is a networking guru who can connect you with exactly the right people at the right time."
"We are all very excited about Exotic Systems' future," enthuses Brian Carl Brown, business development manager of SoftstartBTI. "The company is growing superbly and a wonderful example of what can be achieved if the right skills and determination are properly fostered and encouraged. We are proud to be assisting them to grow."
