1980s - Desktop computers become more popular within business, so there is a constant eye on the cost of the technology. Industry watchdogs, like the Software Publishers Association and the Business Software Alliance, are formed to educate and 'police' organisations in regard to copyright infringement on software.

1988 - The Central Computer and Telecommunications Agency (CCTA), now part of the UK's Office of Government Commerce (OGC), develops and publishes the Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) v1.0.

1990s - There is a strong concern for the potential fees associated with being audited on improperly licensed software, causing companies to implement software asset management programmes. The late 1990s sees organisations moving away from a focus on software asset management as publishers and industry watchdogs become more concerned about potential litigation.

1992 - The Control Objectives for Information and related Technology (COBIT), a set of best practices for IT management, is created by the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), and the IT Governance Institute (ITGI).

1998 - A group of software and hardware asset managers in the US begins meeting to discuss the need for a centralised organisation devoted to expanding and codifying information and knowledge within the IT hardware and software asset management fields.

1999 - The OGC (previously CTTA) releases ITIL v2.0.

2000s - There is an increased focus on internal controls and increased regulation. This results in a renewed interest in software asset management.

2002 - The Software Asset Management Consortium is established.

2002 - The Software Asset Management Standards (Version 1.0) are announced to the media.

2002 - The IAITAM (International Association of IT Asset Managers) is launched.

2004 - The Software Asset Management Evaluation Programme is implemented using the Software Asset Management Standard.

2007 - The ISO/IEC 19770-1, the first international software asset management standard, is introduced.
