IT education in the African region, particularly in SA, is "not that far behind" as compared to the rest of the world, says Neil Hopkins, CompTIA VP for skills development.
Hopkins addressed delegates at the Education to Careers forum held at the Tshwane University of Technology last week.
He said there has been significant growth of education in all professions, including IT, in SA.
Hopkins added that it is important to align IT with education, as technology affects everything in today`s world in one way or another.
Companies should demand specific IT skills, he noted. "Getting the right skills and standards to create a solution that will meet demands for more productive IT professionals in today`s global economy is significant."
Speaking on overseas trends that would impact the local IT training arena, Hopkins said: "A big issue in the US is the need to try and bring more women to IT, and SA has the same experience."
Other international trends include a tendency for more adults to enrol for further education as well as a growing mobile workforce.
