The Telkom Foundation is calling for nominations for "IT, maths and science champions" to be considered for the Aggrey Klaaste educator of the year award.
The project is aimed at improving the quality of IT, maths and science studies in high schools and disadvantaged areas. It also addresses challenges faced by these departments in schools such as inadequate resources and lack of classrooms.
Education minister Naledi Pandor acknowledged earlier this year that there are problems with the way these subjects are taught in South African schools and vowed that more money would be spent on training the teachers of these subjects this year.
Only one nominee per province will be selected in each category, comprising provincial practising educator: further education and training; provincial practising educator: general education and training; and provincial retired educator.
Nominations can be forwarded to the project organiser, Makwetla and Associates, at PO Box 1511, Saxonwold, 2132 or faxed to (011) 447 6204.
Judges, who are IT, maths and science subject specialists, will be selected from various educational institutions and announced later this year.
Prizes include PCs, cash, a classroom and certificates.
The provincial closing date for nominees is 28 October and the national finals take place in Johannesburg in March 2006.
