Drive complexity out of your infrastructure
Johannesburg, 29 May 2007

Companies want to drive complexity out of their infrastructures and reduce costs while improving business responsiveness in order to keep pace with changing market conditions.

Customers want more and they are keen to explore the pay-peruse (utility computing) concept and models. Ownership of the infrastructure is not important, safety is.

Service-oriented architecture (SOA) is still a drive. SOAs facilitated the deployment of "componentised", standard-based functional modules, allowing for interoperability and flexibility in application integration and operation. Storage and data management services are becoming a necessity to enterprises.

Security will continue to be one of the top three priorities of companies. This will include IT service continuity management (ITSCM), as companies are beginning to understand the importance of ensuring that critical business data is secured and is accessible to the business when required. New regulations that have been promulgated are adding pressure on businesses to ensure the correct data standards are enforced and adhered to.

The infrastructure dilemma

Understanding these trends, how are businesses responding? Companies that own, host and manage the IT infrastructure needed to deliver the platform required by the sophisticated software solutions deployed by businesses today, are finding it difficult to keep pace.

Where elements of the IT infrastructure are outsourced, these outsource services are usually provided by various companies, which makes it difficult to manage and ensure that a consistent and reliable service is being provided.

Additional challenges include the retention of specialised IT staff required to manage the IT infrastructure, by being able to pay the salary costs of these staff and to offer them the career opportunities they are constantly looking for.
