IT management reduces cost

Johannesburg, 25 Aug 2006

Apart from the aspect, there is always a huge financial case for adopting best practice in IT management, says GM of HP`s worldwide services division, Lisa Foulger.

HP executives are in the country to unveil two service management courses available to local businesses.

"HP has seen savings of about $300 million per annum by implementing effective IT strategies," says Brian Jakubec, director of IT service management (ITSM) practice at HP`s worldwide education services division.

IT management streamlines maintenance costs, improves the quality of the IT department`s service delivery, allows one to shift investment to innovation, and adapt more efficiently to change, Foulger argues.

She says HP has consolidated about 80 data centres into just six throughout the world, significantly reducing costs by optimising hardware and software, no longer duplicating licences, better asset management and streamlining processes.

Courses

HP`s new ISO 20 000 course is an internationally accepted standard for measuring IT management, and offers training and certification from the global IT service management forum for consultants and auditors.

A second course, which does not culminate in certification, covers IT governance in general, notes Lloyd Robinson, ITSM business development manager at HP`s worldwide education services division.

HP has been commissioned to write one of the six books that will comprise the latest version of the IT Infrastructure Library, a framework of best practice approaches intended to facilitate IT management.
