Italian bank cashes in on best-of-breed printing solution

Johannesburg, 22 Mar 2000

Venture Computer, the sole distributor for Lexmark International in Southern Africa, today announced that one of Italy`s largest institutions selected Lexmark Optra Series Printers for High-Quality Documentation.

From printing money to legal contracts, governments, and brokerages have always depended on the best quality for their documents. Few industries have always pushed to the forefront of printing solutions like the financial industry. Casse Venete Banca is no exception. As part of the Banca Cardine group, it is one of the largest banking and investment institutions in Italy with over 10,000 employees spread from its headquarters in Padua to its international locations.

Casse Venete Banca was using Siemens Nixdorf and Host Printing for its enterprise print jobs but found that it needed to upgrade its system. The company sought a high-quality, cost-effective printing solution that employees could learn very quickly. The new solutions would have to let Casse Venete Banca maintain the quality levels they had created, as well as catering for the expected growth with the dawn of the Euro and their recent agreement to become part of the massive Banca Cardine group.

The group looked into several printing solutions including Canon, Hewlett-Packard and NEC but finally settled on Lexmark`s Optra series.

"We chose Lexmark`s Optra Series because it was the highest quality for the best price, said Dr. Boggian, V. Director General at Casse Venete Banca, "The solution they provided us has been easy to learn and simply made us more competitive."

The expansion agreement with Banca Cardine may cause a crunch for office space, so Casse Venete Banca enlisted Optra 310 compact personal printers to save space without sacrificing quality, volume or speed. Investment bankers get 17 seconds to print time and 600x600 dpi capability, making a perfect solution for the cramped office. Powerful 67MHz RISC processors allow users to print complex charts and graphs quickly. Printing many copies of long, detailed financial reports is not a problem as this solution can handle up to 10,000 pages per month.

The speed of the investment world does not leave a lot of time for professionals to spend at the printer so to keep up with the pace, convenient printing can be the difference in getting a transaction completed on time. The Optra E310`s large paper input capacity saves time and increases efficiency, while a straight output path enables employees to print on a variety of media. As one of Boggian`s goals was to minimise operating costs, he was delighted to know that his solution also included 5000 page toner yield, Toner Saver mode and Power Saver mode to maximise efficiency for the individual employee.

"We have limited space and needed a smaller solution for some areas," Boggian noted, "Lexmark provided the compact quality we were looking for at a great price. We are already saving money from all of the added features."

For larger, more complicated departmental jobs, the is using Optra Se3455 printers, the highest resolution in their class at 1200 image quality and 600 dpi. The Optra Se 3455`s amazingly fast 167 MHz processor cuts complicated financial print jobs very quickly, a relief to Boggian.

"We were worried about workgroup users being able to manage their print jobs quickly and effectively," said Boggian. "The processing power in Lexmark`s solution combined with its MarkVision management software lets the staff manage their own print jobs, saving in overall help desk time."

As speed is critical in today`s lightning-paced financial world Boggian was pleased to know that his users were getting their first pages in 12 seconds. The powerful print engine delivers 1200 Image Quality output at 32 ppm. As shared network resources are critical to the modern banker; getting extra printing throughput on the network is important making the Fast Ethernet link an important asset.

Bank employees can now accomplish a wide variety of departmental printing jobs with maximum efficiency as well. Now managers and LAN users can send jobs up to three 750 pages input and two 450 pages output. State-of-the-art collating supplements user productivity by managing multiple copies directly at the printer, thus providing easy document sorting.

Casse Venete Banca has already seen the benefits of its Lexmark solution primarily in efficiency and improved quality of its print jobs. The bank is now looking at Optra Forms, a printer based electronic document software package that will allow the bank to customise and store the many forms it uses throughout the course of its many transactions and services. It is also considering a Lexmark OptraImage solution for simplified workgroup digital scanning and copying projects.

As the pace of investing and banking globalises and inevitably speeds up, financial professionals will have less time and will need more documents. Casse Venete Banca is sure the printed word will continue to be crucial to its business and is confident that Lexmark will help them manage their complex work while maintaining the quality that is expected by its customers.
