ITSM simulation from Foster-Melliar gives IT execs a competitive advantage

Johannesburg, 01 Sep 2005

Foster-Melliar has launched an IT Service Management (ITSM) simulation module that gives IT professionals the opportunity to practise, review, refresh and reconfigure without the real-life risk of plunging a business into turmoil in the process.

"The Polestar simulation from Foster-Melliar provides a live, interactive experience that effectively reveals the benefits and consequences of closely aligned IT and business organisations, practically demonstrated in a zero-risk environment. It presents IT professionals with big challenges that need to be managed in a limited period of time. It is based on the ITIL `Best Practice` framework and vividly demonstrates to the user the real benefits that effective ITSM has on revenue and productivity and its role in the delivery chain.

"Foster-Melliar has taken a pioneering role in bringing this simulation to the South African marketplace. We believe it offers ITIL practitioners an unparalleled experience in terms of settling their doubts and queries with regards to their ability and skills without the risk of real-life scenarios," says David Anderson, CEO of Foster-Melliar.

The Polestar simulation was designed and produced by G2G3, one of the top simulation specialists in the world. Polestar is a third-generation e-based simulation based on teaching the principles of ITSM. It explores all the elements that make up an IT organisation, the processes involved and the challenges encountered. Delegates are given tasks and roles that allow them to engage with others, make decisions and learn in a risk-free environment with the guidance of an accredited ITSM facilitator. Throughout the process the environment is controlled and real-life situations are magnified to emulate daily strains on IT organisations.

"This exciting simulation encourages fast thinking, tried and tested methodologies and ownership. Simulation learning is a popular method of embedding theory. It does not replace traditional training; however, combining the two guarantees maximum impact, retention and business application," adds Anderson.

While there are no specific prerequisites for this course, Foster-Melliar recommends that learners have a Foundation Certificate in IT Service Management.

The simulation uses companies that are highly dependent on their IT systems in order to complete sales transactions, control stock and manage finances as a basis. The simulation is available as an instructor-led one-day ITSM awareness course combining ITSM theory and a hands-on simulation.
