South Africa's electricity crisis has pushed environmental and issues to the forefront of all South Africans' minds, says Mariette du Plessis, ITWeb events programme director.

According to Du Plessis, ITWeb's inaugural Green IT Summit aims to find out what exactly green IT means and what local technology executives are doing about it.

The event, taking place on 13 May at The Forum in Bryanston, will explore what the IT industry should be doing in order to meet and beat our environmental challenges, she states.

More information about the Green IT Summit 2008, which takes place on 13 May at The Forum in Bryanston, is available online here.

According to Du Plessis, it will look at how we can lessen the negative impacts of technology, such as carbon footprints, and how we can use IT in order to support individual behaviour change and create positive solutions.

"The event will assist delegates in understanding the challenges facing green IT, their significance and how to overcome them. Subject-matter experts from industry and business will explore the technologies, techniques and strategies to drive IT eco-efficiency."

In addition, Du Plessis says attendees will be provided with practical insights on how to deploy an intelligent IT that will transform their IT and centre operations into more environmentally-conscious yet efficient solutions.

Topics range from "South Africa's green agenda", through to "Eco-innovation: good for your business, good for our planet" and "E-waste in Southern Africa: the good, the bad and how to get it right".
