J2EE 1.4 specification wins unanimous vote of approval from JCP

Johannesburg, 08 Jan 2004

The Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) version 1.4 specification has been approved by the Java Community Process (JCP) in a unanimous vote, says Sun Microsystems. This makes the specification the industry's approved platform for Web services interoperability.

In addition the community is looking to license the new specification and its Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) under new terms friendly to non-profit and open source projects, says Sean O'Hare, Java systems engineer at Sun Microsystems SA.

And as a demonstration of their commitment to the compatible J2EE technology industry, Apache Software Foundation and JBoss Group have become the first open source organisations to license the J2EE 1.4 specification and CTS.

Shared with a wide community of developers who contributed to the design of the J2EE 1.4 standard through the JCP, Sun brings to developers the best in Java Web services technology that is the first to support the Web Services Interoperability (WS-I) Basic Profile.

The J2EE 1.4 specification also includes improved deployment and management capabilities to help developers accelerate time to market for their Web services applications.

"The delivery of the J2EE 1.4 specification realises the vision of an architecture that fuses Web services standards and the Java platform, and represents the most complete implementation of the WS-I Basic Profile that provides cross-vendor Web services interoperability," O'Hare concludes.

Complete information about the J2EE 1.4 specification can be found on the Web at http://jcp.org/en/jsr/detail?id=151.
