Samsung has announced the local availability of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system upgrade for the Galaxy S3.

Android 4.1 was initially announced by Google in June, at the Google I/O Conference. The key focus of the upgrade was on improving the functionality and performance of the user interface.

Last month, Google announced Android 4.2 (also Jelly Bean), with a key feature being the new sharing capabilities, which will allow for the switching of user profiles on a device. The update began rolling out to Nexus devices over the weekend, but users noted an embarrassing bug that saw the omission of the month of December from the month picker in the People app. Google has said it is working on a fix.

Speaking of Android 4.1 for the Galaxy S3, Samsung SA's director of mobile communications, Craige Fleischer, says: "In essence, Jelly Bean is the fastest and smoothest version of Android yet."

The upgrade is available immediately across all local operators. Samsung says the preferred upgrade method is via Kies (Mobile PC Client) and as an alternative FOTA can be used (by downloading the firmware upgrade over the air directly from the handset).

According to Samsung, Jelly Bean makes Android devices more responsive. "We understand that all our Android upgrades are highly anticipated and in great demand locally - especially as they enhance our customers' experience with their Galaxy devices and so we are pleased to announce this availability."
