The management of storage infrastructures within the e-business environment is set to become a lot more efficient. Through Sun Microsystems' Jiro technology, it is becoming easier to create integrated, intelligent storage management services.
Sun Microsystems, together with partner VERITAS Software Corporation, has announced the arrival of the first Jiro-enabled products.
According to Geert de Witte, senior systems engineer (storage) at Sun Microsystems SA, storage providers are racing to deliver network-based solutions that meet the storage demands of the booming Net economy.
"But the lack of tools to manage a SAN infrastructure was a huge stumbling block to the successful implementation of SANs. With the continuing introduction of Jiro-enabled products by third-party vendors, the management of the storage infrastructure should become a lot more efficient," says de Witte.
Jiro technology - the open APIs for storage network management - provides for fast delivery of integrated solutions. The emergence of Jiro-enabled products and services from key industry partners demonstrates the adoption of an industry-defined model that brings true interoperability options and provides customers with a more efficient, less expensive way to manage networks in the dot-com age.
Leading the trend toward true network integration, Sun has released Jiro-enabled versions of the Sun StorEdge T3 array, the Sun StorEdge A5x00 array, and Sun StorEdge Instant Image software, while VERITAS Software released Jiro Enabled versions of VERITAS Volume Manager, VERITAS File System, and VERITAS NetBackup software.
"VERITAS Software has worked closely with Sun since the beginning of the Jiro technology initiative and will continue in this role," said Paul Borrill, chief technology officer for VERITAS Software.
"Developing Jiro Management Facades (MFs) for VERITAS NetBackup, VERITAS Volume Manager and VERITAS File System demonstrates our commitment toward building a community of open-systems storage management solutions and makes it easier for third parties to develop specific Jiro technology based services for our products."
Meanwhile, Sun also introduced the Jiro Enabled Certification Program, the first official process for certifying products for operation in the Jiro Runtime Environment. Based on the Java 2 platform, Jiro technology is an open, freely available set of APIs that provides developers with an infrastructure for building interoperable end-to-end storage management solutions for heterogeneous environments.
"This program should accelerate the adoption of Jiro as a standard, as developers will understand the compliance requirements and customers will know that a certified product will fit into their current Jiro-based storage infrastructure," says de Witte.
