Juniper extends network

Johannesburg, 12 Jul 2005

systems firm Juniper`s acquisition of application acceleration technologist Peribit Networks will help the company offer an "all-in-one" network solution and corner the infrastructure market, says eSecure Distribution channel manager Grant Beukes, Juniper distribution partner for Sub-Sahara Africa.

The Peribit acquisition, worth around $337 million, was completed last week, and follows the acquisition of company NetScreen 18 months ago and more recently WAN optimisation firm Redline Networks. The deals were designed to help Juniper move into the enterprise market space and take on data infrastructure players.

The Peribit acquisition took longer than expected as the deal had to be approved by American competitive commissions, says Beukes.

Juniper will create a new Application Products group to umbrella the acquisitions but Beukes says the strategy for the next 18 months is that Peribit will operate independently while Juniper begins to integrate the Peribit offerings.

Initially a voice-traffic switching company, 90% of Juniper`s business is telco-data router related, says Beukes. However, the convergence of voice and data meant Juniper had to extend its focus beyond voice, he adds.

"So the recent acquisitions will allow Juniper to offer users a network solution that offers converged voice and data capabilities, including firewalls, compression and bandwidth on data infrastructures."

Beukes says the Peribit acquisition will allow Juniper to secure and assure the delivery of mission-critical applications throughout the distributed enterprise. It will also enable IT initiatives such as data centre, e-mail, Web and file server consolidation, application roll-out and Web enablement, disaster recovery and backup and regulatory compliance.

The acquisition will also offer opportunities for new and stronger customer relationships with valued experience across the industry in networking, infrastructure and applications, adds Beukes.
