MTN has positioned four tourist cameras at popular holiday destinations in Durban and Cape Town to provide live feeds to MTN users with multimedia messaging service (MMS) enabled cellphones.
Donovan Smith, MTN GM of consumer marketing, says the four cameras at Durban beach, Table Mountain, Devil`s Peak and Camps Bay are positioned on MTN radio masts.
"Customers now have access to advanced mobile services, which enable them to check out the weather conditions on their favourite beach before they leave their home, or from a meeting in Johannesburg to watch the sun set over Table Mountain in Cape Town," he says.
The service, which is free for an introductory period, uses USSD technology and can be accessed by MTN MMS-enabled handsets, by dialling *123*2# and selecting the tourist camera option. The cameras can also be accessed by logging onto MTNICE. While downloading images from a traffic or tourist camera are free, if they are sent to another cellphone, the user will be charged R2 for the MMS.
Smith says tourist cameras are a continuation of MTN`s traffic cameras, which are situated overlooking intersections in Johannesburg at Buccleugh, Gilloolys, Rivonia, Grayston, Allandale and the N1 East.
"The feedback we have received to date about MTN`s traffic cams has been extremely positive. Based on popular demand, it only seemed logical for MTN to implement this pioneering technology in different centres, and for different uses, across SA," Smith says.
