Knowledge management initiative gives Super Logistics the edge

Johannesburg, 16 May 2002

Super Logistics, Supply Chain Partners and Collaborative Xchange, member companies of Super Group, a giant in the logistics, transport and automation industries, have made significant strides in initiating a knowledge management strategy and managing strategic sales opportunities thanks to an investment in K-Dimension.

SCS's Knowledge Dimension invested over two years of research and development in K-Dimension, a toolset which facilitates virtual collaboration and building up a culture of knowledge sharing within an organisation.

Says Super Logistics general manager Mungo Park: "We needed to gain a competitive advantage and although we identified knowledge management as an integral component in attaining this goal, we were uncertain as to what would give us the quickest return and add the most value to our organisation."

With Knowledge Dimension's assistance, strategic sales opportunity management was identified as this initial focus area.

The solution implemented was a virtual collaborative environment, which assists the companies within the group to focus their efforts on managing their strategic sales opportunities and, as an added benefit, enables tracking of the investment made in winning the business.

Says Knowledge Dimension Director Gary Swale: "It's not enough to simply install a software package for the successful implementation of knowledge management initiatives. The culture of the organisation needs to change to one of a learning and sharing organisation. We recognise this to be crucial and put a lot of emphasis on training and backup."

Lotus QuickPlace is the ideal product to meet our client's collaboration requirements for information sharing across these three companies, within the group and with Super Group's key clients.

Says Park: "Knowledge Dimension assisted us in planning the implementation and defining the scope for that implementation to derive the maximum short-term benefit while positioning ourselves to realise the long-term benefits.

"Most importantly, Knowledge Dimension facilitated the cultural change in the organisation for seamless integration of knowledge management as a fundamental in our future success."
