Kodak virtualises workflow suite

PrintWeek.

The company has teamed up with VMware for the new version, which enables multiple instances of software environments to be run simultaneously on the same server hardware.

This can be used, for example, to set up multiple workflows to add redundancy so that should one fail, the system can fall back to a stable instance, ensuring optimal uptime.

The system also makes more efficient use of hardware, meaning that users can either cut down on the physical amount of hardware used or run a lot more software on the same hardware stack, ultimately making savings on power and cooling demands as well.

According to InfoTrends, commercial printers, package printers, publishers and others are looking for ways to reduce costs while adding server capacity and simplifying IT management.

With the Virtual Operating Environment option, servers the Kodak Prinergy Connect Workflow and the Kodak Insite Prepress Portal System can be managed and expanded more efficiently. Users can minimise downtime by subscribing to an option that employs redundant virtual servers.

In a typical Virtual Operating Environment configuration, a single physical server hosts two Prinergy Connect Workflows (a primary and secondary server) and an Insite Prepress Portal System, thereby providing a Kodak Unified Workflow Solution in one-third the physical space with one-third the energy consumption for server power and cooling.

Licence fees are similarly reduced, and maintenance and operations are more manageable because there are fewer servers to install, support and upgrade.
