Konica Minolta South Africa is a long-standing supporter of local sport. Not only does the company's cycling team compete both nationally and internationally, it also signed a R2.2 million sponsorship of the bizhub Highveld Lions cricket team for the 2007/2008 period.
As part of the sponsorship, Konica Minolta South Africa is also supporting the New Heights Cricket Academy, which was launched in June 2004 and selects promising players from amateur teams on an annual basis to benefit from additional training. Selection criteria include choosing players from previously disadvantaged areas, considering cricketers' playing records, attitudes and their potential to represent the bizhub Highveld Lions.
"The aim of the academy is to improve a player's skills by building on his technical, physical, tactical and mental abilities, while also assisting him with life skills," explains Janine Ferreira, Konica Minolta South Africa public relations officer. "The academy is based in Potchefstroom and is presented during June, July and August, where players also attend beneficial lectures on sports law and handling the media."
The academy is run by the senior management team of the bizhub Highveld Lions and has produced several outstanding players like Goolam Bhyat, Vusi Mazibuko, Enoch Nkwe, and Hennie le Roux.
