Korea curbs food waste with RFID

As of 2010, almost $15.8 billion is spent on organic food waste in Korea each year, not including the additional $525 million dollars spent on disposal, reports Arirang.

Such expenses are predicted to escalate to $21.9 billion dollars by 2015. In effort to pin down the problem, the Korean Ministry of Environment will put in place a new set of measures to get 95% of Koreans to reduce their food waste.

The current garbage disposal system is scheduled to be phased out and replaced by plastic baskets embedded with radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags; indicating the name and address of the user.

UMedia, Mojix partner

Universal Media (UMedia), a system integrator, has signed an agreement with Mojix to provide services for the Mojix Star RFID system, states Market Watch.

Under the agreement, UMedia will offer consulting, system integration services and support for Mojix products targeted to and asset management applications.

"Mojix and Umedia are working together to bring the next generation of RFID enabled supply and asset management to the leading innovative enterprises in the region," says Dr Ramin Sadr, founder and CEO, Mojix.

RFID to aid traffic management

TransCore has been awarded a US patent for an RFID tag disabling device used for high-occupancy (HOV) tolling applications, says Business Wire.

The RFID device is used in managed lane environments when a motor vehicle is being driven in an HOV lane with sufficient passengers to meet the minimum lane occupancy requirements and a toll is not required.

Managed lanes and high occupancy tolling is used to expand capacity in major cities that have limited right of way but need to relieve congestion.
