Korean National Agricultural Cooperative Federation bets the farm on CA`s Unicenter

Award-winning e-business infrastructure management solution ensures effective delivery of services across growing distributed environment
Johannesburg, 05 Dec 2001

Computer Associates International, Inc (CA) today announced that Korea`s National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NACF) has selected Unicenter, CA`s family of award-winning e-business infrastructure management solutions, to increase the stability of its newly distributed computing environment, thereby ensuring uninterrupted service to a growing customer base.

Representing the largest financial institution in Korea, the NACF provides a wide range of business and financial services to nearly 1 400 farmer-owned agricultural cooperative members. After evaluating competing solutions - including HP`s OpenView and IBM`s Tivoli - the NACF selected Unicenter as the nucleus of a server management system designed to efficiently control the organization`s increasingly distributed and complex Unix-based infrastructure.

Specifically, Unicenter enables NACF administrators to closely monitor the organization`s entire enterprise-wide systems environment from a single console, allowing them to quickly address potential problems before end-users are adversely affected. The remote management capabilities of Unicenter allow NACF staff to diagnose and correct situations without having to make on-site service calls. This significantly reduces support costs while providing much higher service levels to member cooperatives.

"While the distributed computing model holds great promise for our business, efficiently managing the distributed enterprise is a tremendous challenge," said Hak-Kyu Lee, project manager, NACF. "Thanks to the power and flexibility of Unicenter, we have gained maximum control over our IT environment at a minimum cost, while offering exceptional levels of service to our member customers. Moreover, Unicenter`s scalable and modular approach means that it will easily grow with our systems management requirements over time."

The NACF is also using Unicenter Database Performance Management tools to centrally monitor and manage its mission-critical databases, ensuring that business data is instantly accessible at all times. In addition, CA`s AllFusion Harvest change management solution will accelerate and simplify NACF development efforts.

"As they shift from mainframe-centric to distributed models, financial institutions such as the NACF require extremely effective management tools to maintain stable, uninterrupted business operations," said Toby Weiss, country manager, CA Korea. "CA`s industry-leading Unicenter solution provides this critical stability and control, allowing organizations such as the NACF to gain the technical and economic benefits of distributed computing without sacrificing service levels."

The National Agricultural Cooperative Federation

The National Agricultural Cooperative Federation (NACF) is the capstone organisation for 1 387 farmer-owned agricultural cooperatives with two million members in Korea. The NACF represents member cooperatives and their member farmers, while simultaneously operating its own businesses. As of the end of 2000, a total of 17 806 staff members were working for the NACF, along with an additional staff of 51 231 at member cooperatives.

The Agriculture Cooperative Law of Korea authorises the establishment of the NACF and its member cooperatives, which occurred in 1961. As of 30 October 2000, the NACF achieved its target of 50 billion dollars in total deposits. When the total deposits of the NACF`s member cooperatives are added to those of the NACF, they amount to 113 billion dollars, making the NACF the largest financial institution in Korea.
