KWV uncorks world-class quality initiative with PRAGMA

Paarl-based KWV, one of SA`s largest wine producers, is implementing an asset performance management system designed by PRAGMA Africa in its drive towards becoming a world-class quality producer.

The implementation includes PRAGMA`s asset management improvement programme (AMiP), the ON KEY asset performance management system (APMS) and the asset maintenance management planning methodology BURO, a tool that supports the growing trend towards outsourcing non-core business activities in the manufacturing, consumer goods and mining sectors.

"The solution will provide a complete, multi-faceted asset performance management system in a combined implementation rather than a phased approach," says Junior Burger, business development manager at PRAGMA Africa. "It covers the improvement programme and includes the change management process."

The software is an online packaging information system that will interface seamlessly with SAP R/3, KWV`s current ERP system. Production schedules will be downloaded via SAP into ON KEY to update the APMS automatically in real-time.

"The online tool will enable us to assess performance values on a weekly basis, analyse data with regard to availability, performance and quality rates, identify and isolate root causes of performance barriers and implement best practices to ensure optimum performance management as a continual improvement initiative," says Oswald Matthews, packaging floor manager at KWV.

Access to real-time data will provide monitoring of productivity and efficiency at floor level. "Operating equipment effectiveness (OEE) statistics will be updated continuously and displayed on the LED display board on the production floor. This will allow the work teams to see the OEE ratings and specific targets for the individual lines in real-time rather than at weekly and monthly production meetings. Access to continuous improvement metrics will encourage improved team participation, transparency and competition across the production lines," says Matthews.
