Completely wireless - this is the general direction in which local area network (LAN) environments are heading, claims D-Link SA.
The leading manufacturer of networking products remains in the forefront what it sees as a definite increase in popularity surrounding wireless LAN technology.
According to D-Link SA branch manager Attie Pienaar, this networking option can be seen as a natural extension of the current wired LAN environment and can substantially benefit an organisation.
"What we are really talking about is cost-effective, quick network deployment inside the office."
Other positives of a wireless LAN environment include high mobility, easy installation, flexibility, scalability and extension. A wireless LAN solution within the office environment offers network mobility and constant access to critical business information.
In terms of product application, the integration of a wireless LAN environment is seen as encompassing a number of advantages and, as such, have gained popularity within several vertical sectors including education, health, retail and manufacturing.
Practical scenarios include flexible Internet access for schools and campuses, mobile nursing stations, point-of-care patient check in and access to records as well as real-time data collection and sharing.
D-Link believes that in terms of product application, the take-up percentage is likely to be around 30% within retail/financial services followed by inventory management, manufacturing and transportation.
Pienaar introduces D-Link`s family IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN as a representative of what kind of product offering the company has for this growing market.
"First in a series of D-Link wireless networks is a family IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN. This is a complete family of high-performance, industry-standard products that covers PCMCIA Cards, PCI Cards, USB adapters, Access Points, Gateways and Print Servers."
According to Pienaar, D-Link`s wireless LAN enable users to work, play and access the Internet wherever they want without being bound to the network wires.
"Portables and even desktops are connected, while users don`t need to plug in any extra network cables. Users are free to stay at their desks or move around, while remaining connected.
"New users can be added to networks at any time, and anywhere without having to run additional network wires," Pienaar continues. "Wireless LAN can also be installed for temporary networking at premises where no cable has yet been installed, and at complex environments where cable installation is difficult."
