As part of their ongoing social responsibility project, Bytes Technology Group (BTG) and Altron are helping previously disadvantaged communities to join the global village through the provision of technology, training, knowledge and life skills.
The latest initiative of the BTG Transformation and Vision 2010 committee was to provide Langa High School, in the Western Cape, with a comprehensive multimedia centre, to assist in bridging the digital divide in the community. As part of the project, three individuals from BTG`s learnership programme set up a Web site for the school.
Freddie Kleynhans, Branch Manager of BTG People Solutions in Cape Town, says the Web site is a great way for the learners to put the theory they have learned to practice.
He adds: "The learnership programme is a level four system development programme, and by using the Web site as an opportunity to practise their skills, the learners are proving to businesses and communities that they know what they are doing and can apply the skills they have been taught."
The Web site is an extension of the project to provide Langa with a multimedia centre and access to the digital world through Internet connectivity. The aim is to enable Langa High School to not only use the facility during school hours but to extend its use after hours by providing a commercially viable facility to the local community that could be utilised as a business centre, training centre, Internet caf'e, and so on.
Adds Kleynhans: "The Web site will make the Langa project and Langa High School visible to people who are not directly involved and enable the school to use the facility as a commercial venture."
The Web site will provide a link from Langa High School to the community and business people, and enable the school to grow the ICT skills of the people.
Says Marina Hall, General Manager of software design for Bytes Systems Integration in Cape Town: "The Web site is still a work in progress, but we hope that by connecting Langa High School to the global village, they will be able to gain a presence on the Web and communicate with other schools worldwide."
