LANs buckle under video traffic

Some existing local area networks (LANs), based on 802.11abg gear, are already "buckling under video applications," says Andrew Borg, senior research analyst for wireless and at Aberdeen Group, states SF Gate.

And the surge in sophisticated mobile devices is making it worse.

In higher education, Borg says, those applications include distance learning, online collaboration and social media; in healthcare, remote medicine and large diagnostic imaging; in physical security, video surveillance; and in offices, media streaming, video conferencing, online meetings and more.

Open source alternative to Cisco Nexus 1000v

The open source world has delivered an alternative to the Cisco Nexus 1000v in the Open vSwitch - a software switch that is optimised for multi-tenant public cloud computing environments, reports Search Networking.

The Open vSwitch gives network administrators visibility and granular control of traffic running between and within virtual machines in almost every environment - but doesn't yet work with VMware or Microsoft Hyper-V technology.

The Open vSwitch Project, which is backed by network control software start-up Nicira Networks, provides downloadable coding for the open source virtual switch.

Ceragon eyes advanced software

Ceragon Networks, a provider of high-capacity, LTE-ready wireless backhaul solutions, has entered an agreement to acquire the right to use and further develop advanced Ethernet network management software, writes IT News Online.

This will accelerate enhancements to its end-to-end network management system. The software modules will be further developed and tailored to Ceragon's advanced FibeAir platforms to boost the performance of its PolyView management solution.

The effort will help to simplify the design and management of complex Ethernet backhaul networks.
