Large enterprise data centre evolution accelerated by integrated, best-of-breed solutions

Johannesburg, 11 May 2006

At the Cisco EXPO in Berlin, Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Cisco Systems announced a technology collaboration agreement, which gives a boost to the ongoing enterprise trend of integration between networking and data centre management.

The two companies agreed to work together on delivering combined data centre products. Through bringing together core network, server, applications and storage components, the agreement is designed to offer customers, who increasingly expect their infrastructure to deliver value as a whole, simplified integrated solutions and additional economic efficiency within the Dynamic Data Centre environment. The global technology collaboration is effective immediately.

Designed to assist large enterprises that are following the growing trend towards tightening the integration between data centre and networks, the addition of best-of-breed Cisco switches means that Fujitsu Siemens Computers can deliver greater flexibility and reliability for core data centre components. This integration will provide large enterprise customers with increased agility and continuity in the way that they deploy computing resources, delivering greater business efficiency to meet ever more demanding service levels.

Fujitsu Siemens Computers will add Cisco Gigabit Ethernet switch capabilities to its PRIMERGY BX600 blade server range. In addition, Fujitsu Siemens Computers will make Cisco MDS 9000 Multilayer Directors and Fabric Switches available as components of its industry-leading Storage Solutions portfolio. These are integrated, pre-tested joint product solutions from Cisco Systems and Fujitsu Siemens Computers, available immediately.

"This initiative is driven by our customers," said Dieter Herzog, Executive Vice-President of Enterprise Products at Fujitsu Siemens Computers. "As large enterprises continue to embrace SOA-driven data centres, we have taken a proactive step to simplify and enhance our Dynamic Data Centre offering. Through more tightly integrating Cisco switches, Cisco and Fujitsu Siemens Computers have a shared vision that the Dynamic Data Centre of the future will take shape as a result of full convergence of communications, server and storage infrastructures. Today we are taking a step towards this with our technology collaboration agreement - which is a win-win-win situation: not just for Fujitsu Siemens Computers and Cisco Systems, but for our customers."

Buck Gee, vice-president and general manager, Data Center Business Unit, Cisco Systems, says: "With the integration of Cisco`s industry-leading technology into data centre and storage solutions from Fujitsu Siemens, customers will be able to reduce data management cost and complexity through advanced security, high availability, fabric intelligence, investment protection, and advanced functionality such as virtual SANs and inter-VSAN routing."

Industry analyst Thomas Meyer, Director, EMEA Enterprise Server Solutions at IDC, comments: "Integrating Cisco switches enhances the Dynamic Data Centre offerings from Fujitsu Siemens Computers. Customers are asking for more integrated solutions and many see integrated blade servers as a stepping stone to dynamic IT."
