Laser coding made safer with dedicated in-line fumes, particles removal unit

Johannesburg, 04 May 2007

As part of its drive to ensure safe and environmentally correct operation of industrial printing, coding and marking equipment in packaging, bottling, food, pharmaceutical and other production lines, a new range of extraction units for cost-effective fume and particle removal during laser marking operations has been introduced to South Africa by the coding and marking division of the JSE-listed Square One Solutions Group.

The sole South African distributor for Domino Printing Sciences plc, a global inkjet and laser solutions provider, Square One supplies and supports local industry with coding and marking solutions for a wide variety of goods packaged in materials ranging from paperboard to plastics and glass.

The Domino DPX range of extraction units is field proven and ensures compliance with international health and safety regulations. Ted Michel, divisional manager of Square One's coding and marking division, said the DPX units protect staff from dust and odours, reduce downtime for unscheduled maintenance, maintain code quality and save costs by preventing in-line product contamination.

"The DPX extraction units are portable and can be very quickly re-sited in the production line or moved from one line to another," said Michel. "They're also compact with automatic flow control, a comprehensive gas and particulate monitoring system, high capacity filters that are quickly and easily changed and noise levels are low."

The units make use of reverse airflow technology to maximise filter life as well as protect the motor and electrical system. The DPX2000 model cabinets and filters are made from acid-resistant materials and are therefore suitable for harsh operating environment, corrosive PVC and high odour applications.

Michel said that in independent tests, the HEPA filters removed 99.997% of all particles above 0.3 microns and 95% of particles down to 0.01 microns. Typically, particulates produced during laser coding are greater than 0.5 microns. "Extraction at this level reduces unscheduled laser lens cleaning and ensures delivery of clear, high quality codes."
