Latest SIGI community phone handles voice, data and fax

Johannesburg, 30 Nov 1998

The latest version of the popular SIGI community telephone, developed by Siemens Mobile Networks and Psitek for cellular network operator Vodacom, can handle voice, data and fax, reflecting the trend towards the vertical integration of communication mediums.

The latest SIGI product, called the SIGI PRO, is installed in Vodacom`s telecentres and can enable services such as fax, data, e-mail and Internet access in communications-deprived areas through connection to the Vodacom network. The SIGI PRO is based on the same Intelligent Network (IN) technology platform developed by Siemens for Vodacom in 1996, which revolutionised pre-paid options for cellular users.

The SIGI PRO forms an integral part of the Vodacom telecentres, introduced for the first time in September at Ithabiseng High School in Matwabeng near Senekal in the Free State. The SIGI-PRO provides the base from which to operate the school`s fax, as well as the Internet and e-mail facilities on its new computers.

Paul McKibbin, head of Siemens Mobile Networks, says the fact that many schools and other potential sites have no electricity should not prevent them from entering the modern telecom era, as the SIGI PRO will run on 12-volt batteries or solar power.

"The Sigi-Pro naturally also has applications in disaster areas, where electricity or the usual telephone connections are temporarily suspended. The unit is rugged and suitable for high-usage applications," McKibbin says.

As with the previous Sigi versions, the Sigi-Pro is connected to a standard telephone, used by Vodacom PhoneShop customers. The Sigi-PRO dials directly into the GSM network, just like a standard cellphone, which means that the call costs are calculated according to GSM airtime tariffs. The duration of the call and the costs are indicated on both the telephone handset as well as the PhoneShop operator`s control unit.

A standard fax machine, as well as a PC, can also be connected to the control unit, which enables access to modern technology such as the Internet and e-mail.
