Latest Sybase platforms improve delivery of enterprise information assets to mobile workforce

Johannesburg, 27 Sep 2005

Sybase, a leading provider of enterprise infrastructure and mobile software, today announced the release of Unwired Accelerator 7.0 and Unwired Orchestrator 5.0.

These new versions further enhance enterprise customers' ability to quickly create composite applications and then easily extend them to their mobile workforce.

"Sybase continues to drive the vision of an Unwired Enterprise with an end-to-end solution that supports information management, data integration and mobile application development," said Gerard Sofianos, practice manager at iAnywhere SA, a subsidiary of Sybase SA.

"Updates to Unwired Accelerator and Unwired Orchestrator allow our customers to realise this vision by enabling their valuable data to be truly accessible to the right people anywhere and at any time."

Unwired Accelerator 7.0 is the newest version of Sybase's rapid mobilisation platform and is designed to help customers more easily push critical information out to the mobile workforce via PDAs, smart phones and other wireless devices, explains Sofianos.

In this capacity, he said that Unwired Accelerator 7.0 is ideal for mobilising legacy applications, sales force automation applications, field force automation, executive dashboards and key performance indicators.

"The platform provides always-available mobile access to critical information sources by supporting a wide-range of enterprise applications, including SAP, Business Objects, Lotus Notes, Remedy, Web-enabled applications, Web services and databases."

The new features in Unwired Accelerator 7.0 and Unwired Orchestrator 5.0 are based on direct customer feedback and market research.

"Through collaborating with our customers we have been able to define their needs and provide an even wider, stronger bridge between the internal enterprise information centre and the increasingly mobile enterprise 'edge'," Sofianos added. "The resulting new features will help enterprises maximise the value of their critical data."

Some of the new features in Unwired Accelerator 7.0 include a mobilisation wizard for SAP applications to help SAP business analysts quickly and easily extend their SAP applications to their mobile workers, for anywhere and anytime access on any device. The mobilisation wizard also features support for Business Objects reports and key performance indicators so that business users can access their business intelligence reports on their mobile devices.

Further enhancements have been made to the Application Builder, making it even easier for developers to develop and deploy mobile applications, while the BlackBerry Unwired Accelerator application now supports field validation and logging.

Brenntag CEE, headquartered in Austria, is a leading full line, worldwide chemical distributor. "With Sybase's Unwired Accelerator, we are able to deploy both newly developed applications and new software releases quickly, easily and centrally - without having to recall our wireless devices whenever there are updates to be made," said Thomas Kafka, director IT management, Brenntag CEE. "As a result, our executives and managers can directly access and share critical business data from back-end applications and data stores, no matter where they are in the world."

Unwired Orchestrator 5.0, Sybase's industry-leading platform for composite application development and mobile solution enablement, liberates information from vertical silos and legacy systems. Based on the service-oriented architecture (SOA) design paradigm, Unwired Orchestrator 5.0 reduces the cost of IT operations and streamlines customers' messaging and data exchange infrastructure by reusing existing data assets to more rapidly develop and deploy new composite applications.

Some of the new features in Unwired Orchestrator 5.0 include full integration with Sybase WorkSpace, a new J2EE-based business process engine, a new Java-based rules and message transformation engine and integrated support for access to databases, FTP, file systems, e-mail providers, SMS messaging, Web services and Java classes among others.

ProPath Laboratory, a leading pathology laboratory, is utilised by multiple hospitals and healthcare organisations to analyse patient tissue samples. "ProPath selected the Sybase solution because it will provide us with the ability to manage the large amount of mission-critical RFID information we are collecting, integrate it with pathology records and our legacy systems, and quickly and easily provide this information to the doctors, patients, insurance companies and other healthcare partners as required," said Mel Lively, Director of Information Technology at ProPath Laboratory.
