LayerOne provides free corporate APN with Intellisync

Johannesburg, 22 Mar 2006

LayerOne, the Africa distributor for Intellisync and Internet Solutions subsidiary, has launched a solution which provides South African companies that are using the Intellisync mobile suite with a free corporate APN (access point node) on either Vodacom or MTN.

Companies that purchase certain volumes of Intellisync to extend company information to mobile users such as e-mail, files and application data often have the requirement to use Intellisync within a private APN. A private APN allows organisations to control GPRS billing for their users as well as control what mobile users can access in the network including the Internet. A private APN also ensures an even greater amount of security because it does not rely on the Internet at all.

Says Stuart Hardy, MD of LayerOne: "The Intellisync Mobile suite incorporates the highest level of security using 3 DES and 128-bit AES encryption over the Internet, but for some companies even that is not good enough. For those organisations a private APN is crucial because it allows their mobile users to connect to the company network without having to traverse the Internet. A private APN also allows companies to manage GPRS costs and benefit from aggregating all GPRS usage of their users thus lowering the cost of GPRS to as little as 58c a Meg from R2."

LayerOne created the bundle in line with parent company Internet Solutions and relies on the corporate company having connections to the service provider. Internet Solutions takes the GPRS traffic straight from Vodacom and MTN, and securely transports it to the private company network using MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching).

"Because most mobile users, whether sales staff or engineering, travel across the whole of South Africa, they are most likely to get a consistent access from GPRS rather than the higher bearers such as EDGE or 3G. For this reason and even when using a private APN you need services like Intellisync that make the transactions more efficient with the use of compression. Intellisync also allows companies to send users information through application mobilisation such as service requests, e-mail and many other services. We believe companies that have an APN will use it more with technologies like Intellisync," ends Hardy.
