LayerOne, the company which provides an equivalent offering to Blackberry in SA, will provide an option to corporate users with either the P800/900 or 910 to connect to their corporate e-mail and personal information through the LayerOne Mobile platform.
The solution, which has been available from LayerOne for the last two months, has been successfully applied by a number of corporate clients and their users. The service gives Sony/Ericsson users the ability to do fast e-mail synchronisation in real-time using encryption and compression to lower the cost of data transactions over GPRS.
"LayerOne Mobile Solution supports all smartphones in SA of which Sony/Ericsson has the lion`s share. In the last few months we have installed a number of Sony/Ericsson devices with the LayerOne mobile client enabling them to get real-time access to their e-mail and calendaring information. With the introduction of the new P910 in the near future, LayerOne believes the amount of Sony/Ericsson devices in the market will increase substantially, and it is important to be able to offer this market real mobility solutions, to take advantage of the devices they have," says Stuart Hardy, Managing Director of LayerOne.
LayerOne Mobile Server supports Symbian, Palm and Windows CE smart phones and PDA devices for real-time e-mail and personal information such as calendar, contacts, tasks, etc. Even though it has been focused on supplying clients for smart phone devices or notebooks, it will expand its range of mobile clients to include other non-smartphone devices such as the Nokia 6600. A Web browser version of the software is also set to launch which will provide e-mail and calendar services on over 160 cellphone devices in the country.
Says Hardy: "LayerOne has been focused on supplying mobile clients to smartphone devices and PDAs, but the number of normal cellphones in the market is absolutely staggering. We believe it is important to be able to provide all cellphone users with access to e-mail and calendaring information when they require it. LayerOne can already provide mobile clients for 160 different devices in the market, but the cost of the clients for these devices is still too high for the South African market, which is the main reason we have not made it locally available. We believe we will be ready to launch this solution in early 2005."
