LayerOne, the Nokia Intellisync and Option Distributor for SA, announced today that it will release the new 7.2 Meg HSUPA capable data card in December this year.
The data card will support the network plans to roll-out HSUPA (High Speed Uplink packet Access) in the next six to 12 months but will continue to support HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), 3G, EDGE and GPRS in the meantime.
HSUPA provides uplink speeds of up to 5.8MB per second although initially expected to be only 1.4MB (currently + - 640Kbps upload).
The current network roll-outs from Vodacom and MTN are HSDPA which support up to 1.8MB of downlink speed. The next upgrade to HSDPA will be 3.2MB downlink and plans are being looked at for a upgrade to 7.2MB downlink in the future. Both of these upgrades will be supported by the GT Max data card from LayerOne.
"Purchasing this card now will ensure that when the networks upgrade, you will not have to purchase another card to take advantage of the additional speeds on offer. The GT Max 7.2 Meg data card can reach speeds of up to 7.2MB per second as the name indicates. Therefore in most cases you will not need to purchase another card for the next few years, guaranteeing you a good return on your technology investment," says Stuart Hardy, MD of LayerOne.
The GT Max card has three distinct advantages against other data cards available in the South African market. They include the capability of supporting future network upgrades like HSUPA, you don't have to remove the data card when you have finished using it because it remains permanently in the notebook, and there are no CDs required to install the data card. All you have to do is plug the card into the machine and it will install off the card.
"We provide the GT Max data cards to corporate companies in conjunction with Vodacom data bundles as we believe that Vodacom will be the first company to make HSUPA or higher HSPA speeds available because of their success in the data space. In most cases, we also include Intellisync Push e-mail for laptops and file sync which creates a much richer mobile experience for mobile users. The new GT Max are slightly more expensive than other data cards on offer in the market but because of their ability to support future network upgrades and their other unique qualities, we believe it makes them far more attractive," ends Hardy.
