LCD prices slide as Samsung production facilities increase in magnitude

Johannesburg, 27 Jun 2006

Tarsus Technologies has announced that LCD monitors have experienced a steady decrease in price over the last few months, as a result of the increasing demand for LCD panels and the scaling up of production facilities by manufacturers to satisfy the need in the market.

Darryl Squara, Samsung product manager at Tarsus, says the reductions have been substantial. "Over the past six months, we`ve seen the prices drop by as much as 50% in the Samsung range of panels. That`s nothing short of remarkable," he adds.

"With Samsung`s announcement of a massive upgrading of its production facilities in Korea earlier this year, the prices are expected to continue to decline over the coming year," Squara continues.

"Samsung is the world`s biggest manufacturer of LCD panels," Squara says. "With its own seventh generation LCD facility, a shared seventh generation facility with Sony and an additional seventh generation line announced at the beginning of this year, Samsung predicts that it will be producing 1.32 million 40-inch LCD panels per month by the end of this year, when its new facility reaches maximum capacity.

"With news like this, it`s no surprise that LCD prices are coming down," Squara opines.

"If we take a look at things from a macro perspective, these production facilities have the ability to intrinsically change the demand for flat panels in the market. The company believes that its investments in technologies used in these production facilities will result in a standard television and panel size of somewhere between the 40-inch and 46-inch mark in the future.

"In line with this, Tarsus itself predicts that the time is fast approaching where LCD panels are the first choice, for both television and computer monitor applications," he concludes.
