Leading commercial bank increases profitability by reducing costs and system downtime

Johannesburg, 29 May 2002

Computer Associates International, Inc. (CA) today announced that Thai Military Bank (TMB), one of Thailand`s largest commercial banks, has selected CA`s acclaimed Unicenter family of solutions to automate and simplify key administrative processes. By utilizing Unicenter to streamline increasingly complex IT management and support operations, TMB is raising the level of service it provides to a growing customer base while greatly reducing IT administrative costs.

With 355 branches spread throughout 75 Thai provinces and abroad, TMB provides a complete array of financial services to individuals and large corporate, institutional, and government customers. Significant growth of the bank`s customer base and the expansion of its operations were making it difficult to efficiently administer enterprise-wide IT systems.

TMB sought a solution to effectively manage its mission-critical IT infrastructure, and to enhance its retail banking capabilities and services. After carefully evaluating competing products, TMB determined that Unicenter family of solutions would best enable its staff to manage the extended enterprise for continuous availability and optimal performance.

"With competition tighter than ever, banking institutions are increasingly focused on improving profitability by maximizing operational efficiency, system availability, and overall customer service. But meeting those goals requires a comprehensive management solution that is scalable and proven in highly demanding technology environments," said Narathorn Wongvises, first executive vice president, Thai Military Bank. "For TMB, Unicenter exceeds those requirements. It can both automate and centralize IT administration, allowing us to improve and rationalize workflow and centralize back-office functions with little deployment effort."

From a central console, TMB administrators will utilize Unicenter Asset Management and Unicenter Software Delivery to automatically update and accurately inventory IT devices in all branch locations, thereby providing greater consistency, reliability and control over the enterprise IT environment. Unicenter Service Desk and Unicenter Remote Control will enable TMB support personnel to proactively diagnose and resolve system issues before they impact end users.

"For financial institutions like Thai Military Bank, information systems play a key role in realizing revenue, as well as in acquiring and retaining customers," said Srithong Charoenkornvijit, country manager, CA Thailand. "By ensuring the continuous availability of those systems and reducing operational costs, CA`s Unicenter will help TMB to improve profitability and compete successfully in its regional market."

SVOA Public Company Limited, a strategic services partner of CA based in Thailand, assisted with the implementation of Unicenter.

"Reliability and accuracy are two critical requirements for the real-time banking environment, as is the ability to adapt to changing market and customer requirements," said Jack Min Intanate, executive chairman and CEO, SVOA Public Company Limited. "Through its Unicenter solution, CA will ensure that TMB gets the highest value and performance out of its IT systems. By providing quality outsourcing services, SVOA will help TMB`s technology team to stay focused on the bank`s core business processes. Together, we will greatly support TMB`s growth."

Thai Military Bank

Thai Military Bank, the fifth largest commercial bank in Thailand, is based in Bangkok with a domestic branch network reaching all business districts in Bangkok and provincial towns across the country. TMB was established in 1956 as a Bangkok-based small commercial bank by the Thai Military with an aim to cater to the banking needs of a selected clientele, particularly military units of the Thai armed forces and their personnel. The bank later expanded its business to provide banking services to the public in general including private enterprises. Growing rapidly after almost two decades of conservative operations, the bank emerged as a midsized commercial bank with a strong customer base in the 80s. After the financial crisis hit Thailand in 1997, TMB had to reinvent itself needing a broader capital base and a sweeping change in management. In 2000, TMB successfully raised its much-needed fresh capital from the public with the support of the Ministry of Finance. Under its new board with a mix of top-ranking military men and well-respected professionals from the private sector and Mr. Somchai Sakulsurarat as the first outsider to take the bank`s president and CEO position in July 2000, TMB moved swiftly to regain its footing after 3 years of loss-ridden operations. By the first quarter of 2001, TMB`s bottom line was in the black and development took off in every direction. In terms of banking technology, TMB is matching well with its larger peers. "We aim to be the frontrunner in retail banking in which multi-channel service delivery capability is the key. So we need to upgrade our services in every way based on new technologies available in the market," said Mr. Sakulsurarat.
