Lechabile Storage Solutions, a leading provider of storage applications, has successfully completed testing of a cost-effective computer-based storage system for video surveillance applications.
The high cost of storing video on computer-based storage systems has inhibited the broad acceptance of this technology to date. However, the rapidly falling costs of data storage over the past year have enabled Lechabile Storage Solutions to develop a video surveillance solution suitable for the most demanding surveillance applications. The video surveillance solution is based on the latest industry standard MPEG-4 encoding technique (similar to the encoding technique used on commercial DVDs). As a result, the quality of recorded video meets or even exceeds the quality of traditional videotape. Since the picture is recorded in a computer-based format, it is possible to site the security control room at any location with Internet access.
A key feature of the solution is the ability to protect users` existing investments in cameras and networks. The technology supports both analogue and digital cameras, and a network infrastructure based on an existing video network over co-axial cable, a standard CAT-5 computer network, or even an existing telephone network attached to the local PABX. As the system is used in demanding environments requiring high availability, it is designed to use any available alternate path in the event of a network failure.
The system is based on industry standard hardware and software running Microsoft Windows, so it is possible to develop a system that interfaces to standard software for archiving the video, eliminating the need to manually change videotapes. It is also possible to interface the system with existing operations where required, such as access control systems, object tracking systems, emergency procedure documents, and active maps.
The system is suitable for deployment in applications starting from 10 cameras, and can be upgraded in 10, 30 or 70 camera modules to an installation supporting several thousand cameras.
