The South African qualifying events for World Cyber Games (WCG) 2005 will take place in Gauteng and Cape Town in August.
Sponsored by Samsung Electronics SA, these events will culminate in the national finals at Sandton City, Johannesburg, with winners flying to Singapore from 16 to 20 November to compete in the finals against 800 gamers from more than 70 countries.
The games that have been chosen for the South African event are Counter Strike - Source, Warcraft 3 and FIFA 2005.
Registration went live last week and will close once all the spots are full.
The first weekend, 6 and 7 August, will be open to all competitors from outside of Johannesburg and Cape Town, and will take place at Eastgate Shopping Centre. WCG SA will subsidise part of the travel and accommodation costs involved in getting to Johannesburg.
The second weekend in Johannesburg, 13 and 14 August, is open to all Greater Johannesburg competitors and will also take place at Eastgate Shopping Centre. The last weekend in August will host the final preliminary competition at Canal Walk Shopping Centre in Cape Town.
The national finals will take place at Sandton City on 17 and 18 September. This final will be played by the top eight from around the country and will be made up of the top two teams and players from the first Eastgate event, the top four teams and players from the second Eastgate event and the top two teams and players from the Cape Town event.
