Letlhaka Technologies turns on FTTH platform at Serengeti

Johannesburg, 01 Jul 2008

Letlhaka technologies, in association with our SI partner SA-Digital Villages, activated an Alloptic GE-PON system at Serengeti Golf and Wildlife estate. This FTTH deployment will eventually serve 1 500 homes with Internet, voice and TV services.

Individual ONUs in the deployment are activated as homes are completed. Letlhaka Technologies represent Alloptic Ge-PON (Gigabit Ethernet - Passive Optic Network) fibre-to-the-home (FTTH), fibre-to-the-business (FTTB) and fibre-to-the-curb (FTTC) equipment, which provides true triple-play services (video, audio and data) at Gigabit speeds to the end-user over fibre-optic cable. Ge-PON is orders of magnitude faster than DSL, wireless or satellite connections and is virtually limitless when it comes to future expansion. Ge-PON differs from traditional Ethernet platforms in that it is a tree-structured point-to-multipoint fibre-optic based platform using 32 times less fibre than conventional point-to-point networks.

Alloptic's Ge-PON system does, however, offer some very unique features that are not found on other Ge-PON systems, which sets it apart from the competition. Features like field-hardened ONUs, TDM voice with E1/T1 ONU ports, variable packet lengths, and special traffic handling for different services with individual bandwidth controls.
