Venture Computer, the sole distributor in Southern Africa for Lexmark International, today announced the industry`s first solution for printing in multiple languages from SAP`s mySAP.com applications with a single printer. The solution, jointly developed, fully tested and approved by SAP, allows customers to easily print many of the world`s languages using the Andale WorldType font from Agfa Monotype Corporation.
"Until now, customers that required support for multiple languages and dialects had to purchase and support individual printers for each,`` said Richard Fearon, Business Development Director at Venture Computer. "`Now, SAP.com customers can use a single Lexmark Optra T printer to support multiple languages, character sets and dialects. This consolidation will save money previously spent on extra printers and will reduce support and maintenance costs", Fearon added.
International Printing for mySAP.com supports all Latin (American and European), Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek and Indian characters. "This is a major breakthrough for our global Internet business users around the world`, said Karl-Heinz Hess, extended executive board member of SAP`s AG. "With solutions like International Printing for mySAP.com, the same device with the same generic set-up can print any SAP document in the local language. By standardising on just one printer, customers can achieve significant savings in development, back-up equipment and support costs. Now, multinational companies can implement the same printer model in all headquarters and regional locations without having to worry about problems with local languages and dialects".
Lexmark developed International Printing for mySAP.com for use with its Optra T models. The Andale WorldType font, stored on the printer`s hard-disk option, is based on the Unicode 3.0 standard using UTF-8 encoding. It is a mono line weight, sans-serif typeface that contains about 50,000 characters. Lexmark also updated its Optra Bar Code SIMM firmware to make the new language support possible. Additional typefaces and corporate fonts can be obtained from Agfa Monotype.
For this solution, SAP developed a unique UTF-8 device type to be used with this font for mySAP.com.
